Who remembers the Mighty Atom?! Did you know the Who remembers the Mighty Atom?!

Did you know the Boyertown Museum is home to a very special 1938 Dodge truck once used by legendary strongman Joseph Greenstein, better known as “The Mighty Atom”?

Born in Poland in 1893, Greenstein overcame serious childhood illnesses and went on to train as a strongman under famous circus performer Champion Volanko. His incredible feats of strength eventually earned him the nickname “The Mighty Atom.”

Greenstein traveled across the United States in his modified 1938 Dodge, which served as both his camper and traveling show stage. He even performed weekly right here in Boyertown at Zern’s Farmers Market! After his performances, he sold soaps and elixirs that he developed himself.

Greenstein and his wife Leah raised ten children, several of whom also became strongmen. He also mentored Lawrence “Slim the Hammerman” Farman, whose story is part of the display at the Musuem.

After Greenstein’s passing in 1977, Slim helped save the truck from being impounded. Dr. Elliot Menkowitz later purchased the truck and began its restoration, with the goal of preserving it as closely as possible to how it looked when the Mighty Atom and his family traveled the country.

Today, this remarkable truck helps tell the story of a fascinating piece of American roadside and entertainment history. Stop by the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles and see the Mighty Atom’s truck for yourself!

This year's featured vehicle is the Pullman! Pullman vehicles were manufactured in York, PA. Of the total number of Pullmans built between 1905 and 1917, just 25 are known to have survived. The Pullman pictured here is a 1916 and belongs to Cheryl Vaughan.
